We will read Islam: A New History one chapter at a time to ask:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eDoes a historian’s religion, country of origin, country of residence, and values shape the history that they write? \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHow do histories of Islam differ when written  by a believer vs. someone who belongs to another faith tradition?\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWould this history be written differently if the writer were based in the UAE?\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWhat are the facts and what are the opinions in histories of Islam? How do we know?\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWhat kinds of arguments do historians make and how do these arguments show up in their work?\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWhat are the sources that historians use to write histories? \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHow do we evaluate the work of historians?\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou may join one session, all sessions, or some sessions. Each session will begin with a summary of the chapter and discussion will be guided in a way that everyone can participate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis lecture series is by\u003cstrong\u003e Shatha Almutawa,\u003c\/strong\u003e who earned her PhD in intellectual history, focusing on the history of ideas in tenth-century Iraq. Her doctoral work explored the reception of Greek philosophy in Muslim thought. She has taught courses on Arabic philosophy at American University in Washington, DC, the University of Chicago, and Willamette University, all in the United States. Her scholarly work has been published in the Journal of Arabic Literature, Studia Islamica, and other academic journals, and she has published book chapters in edited volumes and entries in encyclopedias.
