Ailesse is a seventeen-year-old Bone Crier—a woman who ferries souls to the afterlife—but to officially fulfill her duties, she must complete a rite of passage: lure her soulmate to a bridge with the sacred bone flute and kill him. Bastien is an eighteen-year-old street rat seeking revenge on any Bone Crier as retribution for his father, who was killed by one, and Ailesse is unfortunate enough to be practicing her ritual when Bastien kidnaps her. The two can't deny their attraction for each other in spite of their clashing goals; however, Bastien's friend has stolen the bone flute, making impossible for the Bone Criers to ferry any souls, and the dead will wreak havoc on the living. Bastien and Ailesse must put their minds together to save the world, even if their real agendas are to kill each other: Bastien for revenge, and Ailesse to complete her ritual. Though the romance plot isn't particularly original, Purdie's Bone Crier mythology is rich, with classic mythological roots and a French-inspired setting. The sudden romance between Ailesse and Bastien, at odds with their whole lives' purpose, veers dangerously close to Stockholm syndrome, though, and the alternating narrators have indistinguishably similar voices (fortunately, Ailesse's Bone Crier friend Sabine gives readers some more interesting perspective). Still, readers may forgive the flaws on account of the genuinely unexpected plot twist and imaginative fantasy world.
