Does reason lead to religion? Can we find our way to prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage through the study of science? Is the study of Aristotelian philosophy a path toward closeness to God? Explore these questions and more in the philosophical narrative by Ibn Tufayl known as Hayy ibn Yaqzan (Alive son of Awake), written in 12th-century Al-Andalus.
This discussion is led by Dr. Shatha Almutawa, who wrote her doctoral dissertation about the narratives in Rasa’il Ikhwan Al-Safa. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago in 2013 and went on to teach at universities in the US. In 2023 she returned to her hometown and founded Kutubna Cultural Center in Dubai.
