This lecture series offers an introduction to key Muslim thinkers of great importance to the history of philosophy. The first lecture, on Al-Kindi, talks about Greek influences on Muslim philosophical thought and examines whether Arabic philosophy integrated the works of Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus into the Muslim worldview. The second lecture focuses on Al-Farabi, looking at the relationship between philosophy, theology, and politics. The third lecture, on Ikhwan al-Safa, looks at other influences on Muslim philosophical thought: Buddhist, Christian, and Jewish influences in particular. In the lecture on Ibn Tufayl we look at the relationship between the human and the environment. The final lecture we discuss debates about the creation of the world, and Ibn Rushd’s argument.
This lecture series is by Shatha Almutawa, who earned her PhD in intellectual history, focusing on the history of ideas in tenth-century Iraq. Her doctoral work explored the reception of Greek philosophy in Muslim thought. She has taught courses on Arabic philosophy at American University in Washington, DC, the University of Chicago, and Willamette University, all in the United States. Her scholarly work has been published in the Journal of Arabic Literature, Studia Islamica, and other academic journals, and she has published book chapters in edited volumes and entries in encyclopedias. She is the founder and director of Kutubna Cultural Center.
