Inspired by the Photography Exhibition The City in Its Details: The Past and Future in Dubai's Architecture

This creative writing session invites participants to explore the connection between photography and language through the practice of ekphrasis—writing inspired by visual art.

Guided by observation, imagination, and reflection, participants will engage closely with photographs from the exhibition The City in Its Details: The Past and Future in Dubai's Architecture. Through attentive looking, they will transform architectural forms and urban details into descriptive language, personal narratives, and poetic expression.

Rather than focusing on writing experience or technical skill, the session encourages curiosity, mindful attention, and authentic voice. Writing becomes a way to slow down, notice the stories held within buildings and city spaces, and reflect on how the past and future coexist within Dubai’s evolving landscape.

Led by:
Daniela Godoy-Waheed is a Canadian–Argentinian artist, educator, and PhD candidate whose research explores ekphrasis, material culture, and the relationship between image and text. Based in the United Arab Emirates, she specializes in traditional marbling techniques such as Turkish Ebru and Japanese Suminagashi, using art as a pathway for storytelling and reflection.

Daniela teaches creative and heritage art practices that combine mindful observation with writing and visual expression. Her work has been featured at regional art festivals and cultural events, and she continues to bridge art and language through workshops, exhibitions, and education.
